Mr. Melancholy

Note* - Due to the reduced venue capacity due to Lv2, two extra shows have been added on the 22nd and 23rd of February.

The only problem people have with being a recluse is that they might have to do it alone.”

Ollie is the keeper of a lighthouse, Enzo keeps forgetting to replace its light, Margot prefers to keep their island in the dark. Suitcases of memories pile high as the empty light spins on loop, illuminating nothing.

Enter Dolores, a runaway circus clown with a package to deliver and a desire to be taken seriously. Relationships are tested as the rules of the characters’ world are forced into question, dislodging their devotion to isolation and disrupting their status quo.

A surreal parable of solitude and sorrow, Mister Melancholy explores how, sometimes, isolation feels safer than human connection, and how the magnitude of the past can overwhelm the hope for a future.

Utilising comedy, movement and elements of the absurd, a team of exciting theatre artists from Tāmaki Makauraru present the NZ debut of this modern classic in an urban art space.

Studio One Toi Tū is transformed into an otherworldly space where rituals of connection take on a life of their own, and the oddity of humanity is celebrated in all of its wonder.

Mister Melancholy provokes and consoles, as it speaks directly to the contemporary experience of isolation.
